ECCare takes part in the robotic surgery program of the Isala Klinieken Heartcentre. After an initial start of the program, involving robotic assisted lung procedures and OPCABG procedures the program is now really kicking of with the start of mitral-valve repair procedures. This of course involves extracorporeal circulation support

The Isala Klinieken are the first to be using the da Vinci robot in cardiac and pulmonary surgery. It offers potentially many advantages to the patient like:

 - smaller incisions, less pain and therefore reduced exposure to anesthetic an pain medication
- reduced bloodloss and need for donor blood transfusions
- reduced risk for infection
- shorter hospital stay, faster recovery to normal day live
- less scarring

The complete robotic team will be sent out to receive intensive training prior to performing the first procedure. They will take part in the icrs-training program at Saint Joseph  Atlanta, USA. They will receive their training from the team led by D.A. Murphey MD.

The Saint Joseph's Hospital was in 2004 named as the exclusive training center in the Southeast USA for the daVinci® robotic surgery system. Saint Joseph's International College of Robotic Surgery (ICRS) is one of only five training sites in the world for the daVinci® surgical system, where physicians from throughout the southeast and around the world are trained in the techniques of minimally invasive, robotic surgery.

The International College of Robotic Surgery (ICRS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of minimally invasive techniques using robotic instrumentation. Their goal is to share the knowledge and team experience along with innovative methods in robotic surgery.

ICRS offer a whole range of instructional videos with regard to robotic surgery at their website. Certainly worthwhile checking out.
